Understanding Different Types of Dental Floss: A Comprehensive Guide
In our last article we discussed the importance of flossing, now we will explore the various types of floss available and the pros and cons of each. With so many options on the market, it can be overwhelming to make a choice.
While it’s true that any flossing is better than none, it’s important to note that improper flossing can potentially harm your gums. Let’s take a closer look at one of the most commonly used types of floss: Dental Tape.
Dental tape is typically what most people envision when they think of flossing, and it is the most widely recommended type for general use – unless the individual has dentures. It is also referred to as dental string or simply dental floss, and it comes in several variations:
All-Natural Floss: These flosses contain fewer chemicals compared to other options, making them a preferred choice for those seeking a more natural alternative. However, they may not be as durable or long-lasting. All-natural flosses may include variations such as waxed or flavored options.
Waxed Floss: Many people appreciate the thicker, wax-coated texture of waxed floss. While it can be more difficult to maneuver between tight teeth, it is generally more durable and effective at removing debris compared to unwaxed floss. The choice between waxed and unwaxed floss often comes down to personal preference.
Unwaxed Floss: Although unwaxed floss may not remove debris as effectively as waxed floss, many users find it easier to handle and more comfortable, particularly when working between teeth that are more closely spaced.
Woven/Braided Floss: This type of floss expands when wet, which can enhance its ability to remove debris. It’s particularly useful for individuals with larger gaps between their teeth, as the expanded floss is more effective at cleaning these spaces.
Superfloss: A product by Oral-B, superfloss is designed for those with larger spaces between their teeth or individuals who wear orthodontic appliances such as braces. It is specifically designed to get underneath wires and braces to maintain optimal oral hygiene.
Dental tape remains the most commonly used floss and is an excellent option for most individuals. In future articles, we’ll delve deeper into proper flossing techniques and explore other alternatives, including floss picks, floss threaders, and water flossers.
